2020 Retreat Info for Foster & Adoptive Families

We are thrilled and excited to present our second annual retreat for foster & adoptive families! Retreat weekend will be August 28-30, 2020 at the beautiful Camp Kon-O-Kwee in Beaver County.

We have received a grant to cover a majority of the retreat rental costs and so we are thrilled to offer the whole weekend at just $110 per family. This includes a 2 night stay,  5 buffet-style meals (Friday dinner - Sunday breakfast) and lots of fun activities. It's going to be a great weekend with fun for all kids ages 0-18! Activities for the weekend will include: a playground, basketball, gaga ball, hockey, volleyball, frisbee golf, hiking, climbing wall, boulder wall, zip line, canoeing, fire pits, splash pad + more.

We ask for each family that comes to commit to attending each scheduled event that we have set up. You will have plenty of down time and activity time for your family, but know that our workshops will also bring great value to each foster/adoptive family as well. We also ask that you stay for the whole weekend so the meal numbers do not change for the camp staff.

Our theme for the weekend is CONNECTION. It is our hope that families and kids will be able to connect with other families in similar journeys. We will also be delving deeper in connection to the experiences that kids share in this unique path for them.

We will give families lots of opportunities to hang out, relax and enjoy the fun activities that the retreat center offers. We will be gathering together as groups throughout the weekend for special times of connection.

We also want to note that we want to honor the dignity of all kids with difficult backgrounds as well as their first families. We want to respect the privacy of their stories and ask that details of their personal story or family history not be shared.

Here is our tentative schedule:

Friday
4-5pm: Check in
5-6pm:
Dinner
6:15-7:15pm: Keynote address from Angela Tucker. (http://www.theadoptedlife.com/) This keynote address will be for all parents and all kids ages 5 & older. We will have a dedicated childcare team (with clearances) to watch over kids ages 1-5.

Saturday
8-9am: Breakfast
9:15-10:45: All parents attend a panel of birth moms as we learn and understand more how that process has played out in their lives. Kid care will be provided for ages 0-18. Kids will do a variety of activities and have tons of fun!
11:30-12:30: Lunch
12:45-2pm: Workshop with Angela Tucker for any teens (12-18) who have experienced foster care or adoption. Angela has an amazing way of connecting with teens through her firsthand experience in foster care and adoption. This workshop gives teens tools in working through complex feelings and language to help express these challenges.
12:45 - dinner: free time for families
5-6pm: Dinner
6:15-8:15pm:
ADULTS: kid-free time for adults! Enjoy time with your spouse, another friend or just some quiet time alone to recharge.
KIDS: Al Mazing will be bringing his very entertaining show for kids to enjoy some great laughs! Followed by a snack time and then a movie will be shown until pick-up. We have an amazing group of volunteers who will be watching over all the kids during this time.

Sunday
8-9am: breakfast
9-11:30am: family activities open
9:15-10am: optional worship service
Our retreat will not be religious focused in nature and we encourage anyone to attend regardless of your religious beliefs. However, we do acknowledge that many families will be missing their Sunday morning church service to attend the retreat. So we will be holding a worship service after breakfast on Sunday. Attendance is optional.
11:30-Noon: pack up and clean up! (No lunch provided on Sunday. Zelienople or Cranberry would be the closest places to stop for lunch.)

We hope you can join us for this fantastic weekend. We are looking forward to connecting with you!
